Art exhibit opens at Indian Hills By Matt Buhrman
OTTUMWA, IOWA -- The Darrell Roberts Art Exhibit opened on Monday in the library gallery at Indian Hills Community College.
Roberts is a 1993 graduate of Indian Hills and now owns an art studio in Chicago.
"He's been in Chicago a good bit of that time, and has been doing great things there, so we wanted to have him back down and do a show. We love to highlight our success stories," said Mark McWhorter, an Art Professor at Indian Hills.
Much of the colorful artwork on display is Roberts' reflections on landscapes and life in and around Chicago. His paintings have richly textured surfaces that create a sense of depth. All artwork is available for purchase.
McWhorter described Roberts' unique style and those who influenced his work.
"I suppose if you were going to classify him, he is a Neo-Abstract Expressionist. And his work owes a lot to the Abstract Expressionists from the New York School of the 1950s and 60s: Jackson Pollock, and Franz Kline, Hans Hoffman," McWhorter said.
And when it comes to selecting a personal favorite?
"I'm still selecting. I generally do try to select a favorite piece, but I know myself well enough when I come into a show like this, I'll end up selecting a different, favorite piece each time I come in," McWhorter said.
A reception was held on Monday evening to officially open the exhibit, but Darrell Roberts had to postpone his visit to Ottumwa due to the winter weather across the Heartland.
The Darrell Roberts Art Exhibit is on display at Indian Hills Community College through March 18th.
